Stories about Maman

From:
Marya

Maman was an amazing lady, full of life. She was generous and loved everyone. It was so comforting to know that I could call her anytime to tell her about my day. Her comment, “don’t let the world bring you down” گوره پدر دنیا always made me smile.

I remember when I was six years old, our family friend and her daughter who was couple years older than me went shopping in Bazaar, Yazd. Maman bought a broom from one of the stores in bazaar but because she didn’t want to carry the long broom everywhere she asked the store owner if he would keep the broom until she was done shopping. The owner said yes and we continued shopping. The family friend’s daughter, Fariba, and I got ahead of our moms and kept walking until we walked too far and couldn’t see our moms anywhere.  It was a very crowded bazaar and we both were worried. Fariba was panicking and kept calling her mom. She started to cry. I wanted to cry too. I could hear maman’s voice in my head before we left home that said, don’t go too far, stay with me. After unsuccessfully finding our mothers, I remembered that Maman told the owner of the broom store she will be back to pick up her broom. I told Fariba let’s go back to broom store and wait for them. When we got to the store, there they were, our moms standing there, hoping we would come back to broom store. I was so happy to see maman. She told me how scared she was and begged everyone in the bazaar to look for us. Maman told everyone the story of my bravery over and over. She made me feel proud of myself and know that I can solve problems by myself. Thank you, Maman. Until we meet again.

I remember just about everything about our kind and caring mother. She was the best mother anyone could wish for.
42 years ago, close to Christmas, I was all packed and ready to -on my big trip to the USA. I remember Moman had been quietly crying for the last several days. Every time I looked at her there were tears in her eyes. She made Khorosht bademjoon for me just about every day because it was my favorite.

She insisted that I take a box of Dulcolax with me. And I loved and cherished her NASEEHAT (advise).

We miss you our dear Moman. Living is not the same without you. Rest in peace.

When Farshid was little, Maman used to say to him, "Farshid please fly (bepar) and go buy some bread," and Farshid would respond, "but I don’t have wings, Madarjoon."

_

When we were busy taking care of things, Maman used to bring fruits or snack for us to eat. We said but we can’t eat right now, but she would always say first take care of yourself then worry about taking care of other things.

Alireza, Masoud, Maman and I went to Turkey one year. We went to the beach. Alireza, massed and I went swimming but Maman sat on the sand and watched us. After a while, I told Maman why don’t you join me; let's go swimming. Maman said okay. When we got to the water, a big wave hit Maman’s leg and she fell under the water. I helped her to get up but another wave came and hit her again and she fell again. Maman was lagging so hard. I tried again to help her but this time another wave came and hit me and I fell in the water. We were laughing so hard. The lifeguard came to ask if we were okay, but because we were laughing so hard couldn’t explain to him. Finally, he helped them and brought them to shore.

One day Madarjoon and I went shopping. Madarjoon told me she needs to buy undergarments. Madar joon paid for her undergarments and the owner put those in a bag without a handle. When Madarjoon and I got out of the store, a guy called out to us and said, “lady lady!“. I turned around and the guy said something fell off of that lady. Madarjoon and I saw Madarjoon’s undergarment flat on the ground. Madarjoon said oh, my god the guy thinks this underwear came off of me. We laughed so hard that we couldn’t continue shopping, and we had to go home.

My favorite memory of Madar Joon is when we went to Target to go shopping. They had an electronic wheelchair there and we practically forced her to use it. We asked do you know how to use one and she said, "Of course, this is so easy." She pushed a button and started going down the aisle hitting everything in sight. She tried backing up and hit a woman and we were all laughing so hard, our next stop was to go to the restroom. We had so much fun with her in the wheelchair that day. I will never forget it.

Once when Maman and I were in Roodbar, we ate our dinner that Maman made. It was delicious. It was midnight and Maman went to bed, and an hour later, I went to my room to sleep. After a short while, I felt the ground shaking; it was an earthquake. I went and knocked on maman’s door, and she opened the door and ask me what was wrong? I said Maman, "It's an earthquake!" She said, “Don’t worry about it. It is over now. Go back to sleep.” I told her we may have aftershocks and that we better leave. She said “No, those are not important. Go to sleep.”

As we all know, Maman wrote on her daily journals everyday. I am copying what she wrote on her journal that made me laugh.

“ I went to Fakhri’s house for dinner tonight. When I came back home, there was a lizard in my house. I called Fakhri, and told her I'm sitting outside of my house. Fakhri asked why. I said, there is a lizard in my house and I am afraid. Fakhari spent the night in my house."

She was afraid of a Lizard, but not an earthquake.

I have so many memories of Madar Joon, but what I always remember first is her laugh. I always loved having her around because I loved hearing her laugh; it instantly made me happy, no matter how I was feeling. She would always tell me stories of my childhood since I was quite the trouble-maker child.

There were two stories that she would always tell me about that never failed to make us laugh.

Once my mom was out and Madar Joon was babysitting me and Monica. I decided it would be fun to go around the house and lock all the bathroom doors. Well, eventually Madar Joon had to use the bathroom. She tried one door after another and was shocked to find that none of the doors would open. She knew there was a small key that could open the bathroom doors so she asked Monica to help open one. They tried and tried, but couldn't get any of the doors open. At this point, Madar Joon had to use the bathroom so bad. She called my mom in a panic and said, "I really have to go to the bathroom and Ryan locked all the bathroom doors, please help me." My mom had to come home just to unlock the doors.

Another time, while my mom was at work, Madar Joon was babysitting me along with Grandma. Our fireplace was on and my mom warned them before she left not to let me get near it because I will cause trouble. They said, yea of course and didn't think anything of it. While my mom was gone, Madar Joon and my Grandma look over and see that I am holding one of the charcoal tongs and grabbed a hot piece of charcoal from the fireplace. Then, I dropped the charcoal on the carpet and it began to burn a hole through the ground. Madar Joon and Grandma start screaming and freaking out over what to do and try to fix the mess. When my mom got home, Madar Joon looked petrified, and Grandma looked like she had pulled her hair out and was swearing underneath her breath. They were so scared that my mom would be upset since she had warned them about me and the fireplace. It is a scene that nobody could ever forget.

Every time Madar Joon would tell us these stories we both would laugh and laugh until we cried. I will miss her silliness and her beautiful soul.

Modar Joon came to the US right before I started my first year of law school. She taught me everything I know about Persian cooking as well as how to speak Farsi (Obgi has also taught me a lot). Once, when I had an exam that was particularly difficult, I came home and told her I must have failed it. She danced for me, sang for me and made me Ashe Jo (one of my favorites). She did her best to put me in a good mood, and it worked. Before the test, she also gave me a piece of turquoise to wear for good luck. It worked, I got a B+, which happened to be the third highest paper in the class. She also loved going shopping, asking me “Susie Joon, en yeh dollareh?” about anything she wanted to buy. I definitely won the mother in law lottery.
